I have a son in Afghanistan. Without going into details, he is a very accomplished warrior. But he faces challenges in the environment in which he operates. By day, the enemy walks among the rest of the population. At night he sneaks out and plants bombs on the side of the road. Being able to see this enemy is mission critical for his teams.

The wars on waste being waged by process professionals share many of the same paradigms. Waste is present among us every day, yet it looks just like everything else we do. It blends into its surroundings well, until it blows something up or erodes the moral of the rest of the “force”.

In the weeks to come we will explore how data visualization can help expose waste and points of process constraint. In the interim – please share any experiences you have uncovering waste or constraints that were in plain site, but still not visible to the people working within the processes themselves.
